Haiphong, 8/54: French officer and Viet Minh counterpart discuss plans for the departure of colonial French troops, following their defeat at Dien Bien Phu. French rule began in 1859, and following Dien Bien Phu they lost more than 35,000 troops in Vietnam, many of which were from other French colonies such as Morocco and Algeria. The departing French troops were oddly allowed to continue carrying weapons even after their defeat. Photo: © Nguyen Dinh Uu |
